The Paramount: What's New

4th Annual Grand Marquee Gala Held on May 22, 2014

The Paramount Theater held its Fourth Annual Grand Marquee Award Gala on Thursday, May 22, 2014. The Paramount, in celebration of ten years since re-opening the fully-restored theater, presented the Grand Marquee Award to the original co-chairs of the theater’s restoration effort, Janice and Bob Aron and Carter and Wick McNeely.

The gala evening’s theme, “It Takes a Village,” was selected as a tribute to the enormous efforts made by all of the community members who worked to restore The Paramount when facing near demolition, and who continue to support it still. The evening included private dinners for guests hosted at Fleurie, Ten and Zocalo, and featured a special performance by acclaimed 70s-era icons, The Village People, followed by an After-Party at The Paramount Theater.  An approximate 240 people participated in the event, which raised close to $175,000 in funds for the nonprofit Paramount Theater.

ABOUT THE HONOREES
For most of the middle of the 20th Century, Charlottesville’s Paramount Theater had taken a leading role in the community. The grand movie palace had hosted scores of films, war bond drives, fashion shows, cartoons for kids, and popular rock and roll artists, entertaining multiple generations of area families. So even as the lights dimmed on the marquee back in 1974, the theater was not forgotten.

Boldly leading the charge to restore The Paramount to its original grandeur were Janice Aron and Carter McNeely. Janice and Carter co-chaired The Paramount Theater Restoration Cabinet, originally formed in 1999, and their spouses, Wick and Bob, joined them as Co-Chairs of the capital campaign. The early dedication and enthusiasm of Carter and Wick McNeely, and Janice and Bob Aron “set the stage” for the tremendous restoration effort and ultimately the grand re-opening of The Paramount in December 2004. Their vision, generosity, determination and leadership through the early years of the capital campaign and the restoration construction phase were indispensible in bringing The Paramount back to life.

Now nearly ten years have passed since the Grand Reopening and The Paramount continues to fulfill the vision of its founders, serving as Charlottesville’s “Crown Jewel.” As Board Chair Chris Holden recently stated, “It is now hard to imagine Charlottesville without The Paramount.” The vision and direction of our founding Co-Chairs paved the way for The Paramount to be what it is today.ABOUT THE GRAND MARQUEE AWARDThe Paramount Theater’s Grand Marquee Award is presented each year to an individual(s), business, or organization that has exhibited leadership and an outstanding commitment to The Paramount, to the expansion and improvement of the performing arts, and to the Greater Charlottesville community. This award celebrates their achievements and their dedication to enriching the cultural life of our community.

Newsplex: Children Explore Instruments at The Paramount

February 2, 2014 – Charlottesville Newsplex reports on the LolliPOPS at The Paramount

SEE THE STORY HERE!

The Paramount Theater turned into a petting zoo on Sunday as children got a chance to explore instruments found in a symphony.

The Richmond Symphony performed at the Paramount during their “Lollipops” program.

Before the show kids were able to walk around, touch and hear different instruments, like a petting zoo.

The executive director at the Paramount hopes that it will inspire kids to become musicians like the ones they saw on stage.

“They get to touch and play instruments that they never had access to before and we’re hoping that just a few moments with that instrument might spark something in them to want to play throughout their life,” says Chris Eure, executive director.

“I play not only the violin, but other instruments,” says 12-year-old Ivy Williams. “Last year I was one of the kids who looked at the instruments, so it was different and definitely fun.”

This is the second year that the Paramount has put on the “Lollipops” event.

Charlottesville Voted #2 College Town in America with praise for The Paramount Theater!

Yahoo Travel reviewed the top ten college towns in America and Charlottesville made it as No. 2 behind Burlington, VT. And guess what one of the biggest reasons was?! The Paramount! Check it out:

 No. 2 Charlottesville, VA

What do Tina Fey, Bobby Kennedy, and Tiki Barber have in common? All are alums of the University of Virginia. The diversity of graduates hints at the town’s something-for-everyone appeal. History buffs flock to Monticello, while culture hounds stroll the charming downtown pedestrian mall, with restaurants, an ice-skating rink, and the renovated Paramount Theater, where you can see everything from the Moscow Ballet to up-and-coming bands (Dave Matthews Band got its start here in the early ’90s).

AUDIENCES EVERYWHERE ARE ANTICIPATING THE AUDIENCE STARRING HELEN MIRREN!

“WHOLLY TREMENDOUS!”
- Daily Telegraph
“HELEN MIRREN MAKES ‘THE AUDIENCE’ A ROYAL NIGHT OUT.”
- Independent

Queen Elizabeth II (Helen Mirren). Photo by Johan Persson. 2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA : The Paramount Theater is thrilled to present the highly anticipated new play by Peter Morgan, The Audience starring Helen Mirren on Thursday, August 22, at 7pm. No need for Charlottesville residents to take a trip across the pond, Helen Mirren will reprise her role as Queen Elizabeth II live in London’s Gielgud Theatre which will be broadcast in HD on The Paramount screen.

Chris Eure, Executive Director at The Paramount states, “We have received many requests to bring back the NT LIVE (National Theatre Live) Broadcasts from London and we are delighted to bring these back to Charlottesville with such a highly acclaimed performance as The Audience. With NT LIVE, and the Metropolitan Opera Series, it is truly amazing how much the HD broadcasts simulate the live theatre exprerience. For minimal cost, you and your family can experience the world’s premier performances in Downtown Charlottesville!”

About THE AUDIENCE

Helen Mirren reprises her Academy Award winning role as Queen Elizabeth II in the highly-anticipated West End production of The Audience, broadcast live from London’s Gielgud Theatre as part of National Theatre Live.

For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace – a meeting like no other in British public life – it is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. Not even to their spouses. The Audience breaks this contract of silence – and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional – sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive.

From young mother to grandmother, these private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while she remains constant, waiting to welcome her next Prime Minister.

The Audience reunites writer Peter Morgan and Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren following their collaboration on the critically-acclaimed movie sensation The Queen.

The Audience is directed by Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and presented in the West End by Matthew Byam Shaw for Playful Productions, Robert Fox and Andy Harries.
