FILM INFO

Runtime: 1 hour, 57 minutes

Year: 1978

Cast: Eric Clapton as "Himself", Neil Diamond as "Himself", Bob Dylan as "Himself", Joni Mitchell as "Herself", Neil Young as "Himself", Emmylou Harris as "Herself", Van Morrison as "Himself" , The Band as "Themselves"

On Thanksgiving Day, 1976, The Band gave its farewell concert at Winterland in San Francisco. On hand to help say goodbye to this influential rock group were some of the most acclaimed musicians of the late 1960s and ’70s. This film is not only a vibrant documentary of that historic evening, but also a commentary on the rock world at the time. Most of the picture is concert footage of The Band and their guest performers, highlighted by interviews with members of the group, who eloquently articulate their personal involvement in the history of rock and roll.

“One of the greatest concert films ever made.” Chicago Tribune

Did you know?
  • During his opening guitar solo in “Further On Up the Road”, Eric Clapton’s guitar strap came off. To compensate while he fixed it, Robbie Robertson spontaneously played a brief solo of his own.
  • The Band’s management had overbooked the show. Two days before the show, they tried to have Muddy Waters taken off the bill. Levon Helm, The Band’s drummer, threatened not to play the show if Muddy Waters was asked to leave. Muddy Waters is in the final cut of the film.
  • Before filming started, audience members at the Berkley Orchestra venue were treated to Thanksgiving dinner and dancing. Robbie Robertson recalled in his memoir that one of the shows organizers said it took 200 turkeys to feed the crowd of at least 1,000 people.
