1959 | | Runtime: 136 minutes
Cary Grant stars as an innocent man mistaken for a spy in one of director Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest thrillers. While leaving New York’s Plaza Hotel, advertising executive Roger Thornhill (Grant) has the misfortune of standing just as the name “George Kaplan” is paged–starting a lethal case of mistaken identity and a nonstop game of cat and mouse as he is pursued across North America by espionage agents trying to kill him–and by police who suspect him of murder.

Did you know?
- Sir Alfred Hitchcock filmed Cary Grant’s (Roger Thornhill) entrance into the United Nations building from across the street with a hidden camera. When he gets to the top of the stairs, a man about to walk down does a double take upon seeing the movie star.
- In the DVD documentary, Eva Marie Saint (Eve Kendall) recounts how Sir Alfred Hitchcock, dissatisfied with the costumes the studio had designed for her, marched her to Bergdorf Goodman and personally picked out clothes for her to wear.
- Thornhill appears on the left side of the screen for almost the entire movie.
- DVDs of North by Northwest are on sale in the gift shop at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, in clear view of the mountainside sculpture on which the movie’s climax is staged. (The actors had to work on a mock-up of the famous sculpture because the U.S. Department of the Interior banned filming on the monument.)
