For Immediate Release

June 9, 2008

Just in time for hot summer days, Charlottesville’s Paramount Theater has announced the 2008 Summer Film Series. This season of three movie weekends, which run from June through August, includes everything from family-friendly films to political thrillers, all shown in grand style.

The Wizard of Oz The series kicks off with a Family Fun Weekend on June 21 and 22, and perhaps one of cinema’s most iconic films, The Wizard of Oz. Starring Judy Garland, Bert Lahr, and Frank Morgan, generations of viewers have been endeared to this story of a little girl who finds out, by experiencing other places and people, that there’s no place like home and family.

Nominated for six Academy Awards, winner of the 1939 Academy Award for Best Song ("Over the Rainbow") and Best Original Score (Herbert Stothart), Judy Garland was awarded a special prize for the best performance by a juvenile.

E.T.: The Extra TerrestrialThe beloved Steven Spielberg movie E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial stars Drew Barrymore and Henry Thomas in the tale of 10-year old Elliott (Thomas) who finds himself with a castaway alien on his hands. As the two learn to communicate and become friends, Elliott must decide between doing what he wants (keeping his new friend with him) and what is best (getting ET home).

The Wizard of Oz will show on Saturday, June 21 at 4 and 7 pm. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial will be presented on Sunday, June 22 at 1 and 4 pm.

Additional film weekends this summer include a Salute to the Coen Brothers, July 11 to 13 and Political Intrigue on August 9 and 10. Titles and dates are subject to change.

Admission for all movies is $6, with a Youth/Child price of $4 applying to those 12 and younger. For the first time this summer, movie weekend packages provide savings with an advance purchase of all films in a single movie weekend. Special pricing applies to advance package purchase only, which must be done through The Paramount’s box office at 434.979.1333.

Individual tickets, as well as the latest information on movies at The Paramount Theater, are also available online.
