Continuing the theater’s participation in First Fridays, The Paramount is hosting an exhibit featuring the work of local artist Marci Markwell-Rasbury. Although she is now pursuing painting as a second career, it has always been her first love.
Markwell-Rasbury’s first showing in Charlottesville, her Paramount exhibit opens on Friday, May 2 at 5 pm, and will be installed in the theater’s ballroom (on the ground level adjacent to the grand lobby) for the month of May.
Markwell-Rasbury’s work utilizes multi-media including acrylic, oil pastel and pencil on various surfaces. Deep observation is a strong motif in her painting. She starts each of her paintings by studying the subject’s composition, color, compliments, and opposites, and then seeks to emphasize these in order to heighten emotional content.
A theatrical artisan by trade who has served as a director, costume designer, and manager, her theatre background has given her the ability to be an extreme “examiner” of life’s moments. Given her background, her painting style has been labeled both dramatic and theatrical. Her love of color and the gradients within a single “timbre” drives her creativity, and with this she is able to take an ordinary subject or moment and make it exist on the canvas with vibrant emotion.
The First Fridays Exhibit featuring the work of Marci Markwell-Rasbury will be open on May 2 from 5 to 7 pm. Admission is free.
