For Immediate Release
October 17, 2007
Just in time for Halloween, Charlottesville’s Paramount Theater will present a movie weekend on October 27 and 28 featuring Bedknobs and Broomsticks for the kids as well as Night of the Living Dead. Both films will be shown in grand style on The Paramount’s movie screen, the largest in Central Virginia.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks (G, 2 hours, 14 minutes) is the story of apprentice witch Eglantine Price (Academy Award winner Angela Lansbury). Hot on the trail of the spell of spells -- locomotion, she has no time for the three London waifs plopped on her unwilling doorstep. Price drags the children (refugees from the bombing of London during World War II) along in her wake as well as her con artist of a magic teacher, Emilius Browne (David Tomlinson of Mary Poppins fame). A happy blend of animation and live action -- and one of the only animated Disney movies available to second-run theaters like The Paramount -- Bedknobs and Broomsticks has delighted audiences of all ages for over thirty years.

The low-budget horror classic Night of the Living Dead (unrated in US, Rin Canada; 1 hour, 36 minutes) has been endlessly parodied since its release in 1968. Fans of more recent horror flicks such as Saw will revel in this chilling movie about a relentless flesh-eating army of the “undead,” corpses mysteriously revived by a radioactive Venus space probe. Those who barricade themselves inside a rural house in an attempt to survive the night must listen to -- and fight off -- the hordes of nearly impossible-to-kill zombies outside. Not for the squeamish, this is a graphic horror film with some gory special effects.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks will show on Saturday, October 27 and Night of the Living Dead can be seen on Sunday, October 28. Both films will be screened at 4 and 7 pm on their respective dates.
The Paramount will also offer a weekend of holiday films on December 8 and 9. Admission for all movies is $6, with a Youth/Child price of $4 applying to those 12 and younger.
Tickets are available in advance for most showings. Titles and dates are subject to change.
