"Tryst in MOMA" by Peter Fylene

Continuing the theater’s participation in First Fridays which began earlier this year, The Paramount is working in partnership with Migration: A Gallery (located at 119 Fifth Street SE) to present “Blurring the Lines,” a show of photography by Peter Filene, watercolors by Randall Tipton, and oil paintings on maps by Suzanne Howes-Stevens.

The exhibit will open on Friday, July 6 at 5 pm, and be installed in the theater’s ballroom (on the ground level adjacent to the grand lobby) for the month of July.

Chapel Hill, North Carolina artist Peter Filene travels to art capitals of the world to snap his in-camera double exposure photographs. His focus is capturing complimentary images of people and artwork and combining the two for a new vision.  Peter explains: “Inspired by Robert Rauschenberg’s ‘combines,’ which he created in “the gap between art and life,” I began experimenting with in-camera double exposures.  Now I generally shoot in museums rather than the street, blending paintings or sculptures with people.”

Portland, Oregon artist Randall Tipton has a loose and free style of interpretive painting that feels like dance and reflects a landscape's sense of time and form without overindulgence in distracting detail.  Randall focuses primarily on the landscapes of Northern Oregon and the coast. In his words: “Throughout my career the landscape has been my guiding orientation.  Whether I’ve tried to reduce its complexity to bands and gestures or to focus intently on a particular aspect, my motive has always been to suggest something fundamental and primal.”

Tolland, Connecticut artist Suzanne Howes-Stevens paints the lines where land and water meet in an evocative style unmatched today.  She begins with a map as the background for her images.  As she says: “The maps provide grounding or an anchor for the landscape images, serving as a metaphor for our connection to the earth and our journeys across it.”

The First Fridays Exhibit featuring the work of Peter Filene, Randall Tipton, and Suzanne Howes-Stevens will be open on July 6 from 5 to 7:30 pm.  Admission is free
