With a voice noted for its rich depths, stunning heights, and commanding presence, Oleta Adams transports audiences through powerful singing that has drawn comparisons to the likes of R&B vocalist Anita Baker. On Thursday, September 14 at 8 pm, Adams will bring her urban-infused big ballads and soulful style to a concert at The Paramount Theater.
Since the runaway success of her 1990 debut album Circle of One and the impassioned hit single "Get Here" -- the re-invented Brenda Russell composition that became an unofficial anthem of the 1991 Gulf War -- Oleta Adams has inspired a growing legion of fans in the U.S. and Europe with journeys of the heart. Nurtured by worldwide tours with Tears for Fears, Michael Bolton, and Luther Vandross, her success has been solidified by three Grammy nominations, Top 20 hit singles, and both platinum and gold records.
A child wonder in her hometown of Yakima, Washington, by age eleven Adams was directing and accompanying four choirs in her father's church, having already established herself as a piano prodigy. From this foundation in the gospel tradition, Adams says she has recognized "the power of music to move the hearts of man -- for good or bad." Subsequent to Circle of One, her releases Evolution and Come Walk With Me have further defined who she is as an artist, both musically and spiritually.
Adam's songs cross effortlessly into the realms of soul, R&B, urban, and popular music, while drawing deeply from her gospel roots. It's an approach that has brought her versatile and intense instrument to songs as varied as"“Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me," her jazz/gospel rendering of Billy Joel's "New York State Of Mind," and a blues-enriched interpretation of James Taylor's "Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight." Adams comments that "you'll hear an assortment of stylings in every album I do, using the diversity to best reflect the way the song was intended to be performed, combined with what best delivers the thought of the message."
Seats to Oleta Adams' powerhouse September 14 performance are $49, $44, $41, and $38. Tickets and further details are available online or through The Paramount’s Box Office at 434.979.1333.
