For Immediate Release

July 13, 2006

Just in time for hot summer days, Charlottesville's Paramount Theater has announced the 2006-07 Summer Film Series. This season of seven classics, which will run from July through Opening Weekend for the Paramount Presents series of live performances in September, includes everything from family-friendly movies to a silent picture. The films will be shown on The Paramount's 24' by 50' movie screen, the largest in Central Virginia.

Citizen KaneFirst on the schedule is the 1941 Orson Wells classic Citizen Kane, showing July 25 through 27. Widely considered a masterpiece by critics and viewers alike, and often called "the greatest film ever made," Welles' first directorial feature is the story of Charles Foster Kane (Welles). A man whose fight for power in the publishing world transforms from sheer thrill-seeking to ruthless war, Kane's obsession affects not only himself but everyone his life touches. After Kane's death in the opening scene of the film at his opulent estate Xanadu, reporter Jerry Thompson (William Alland) seeks to find the meaning behind his last word, "rosebud." Thompson interviews the key figures who played a part in Kane's life, which is told in a series of flashbacks. Employing breakthrough techniques in camera angle and focus, editing, sound effects, and makeup, the picture is cited as one of the most innovative works in the history of film. The movie's resolution is thought to be one of the greatest twist endings in cinematic history.
