ABOUT A CHRISTMAS STORY
Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) dreams of the perfect Christmas present—a Red Ryder air rifle. Rejected by a his cranky father, protective mother, and even Santa Claus himself, Ralphie fears the Red Ryder will never be his. Pursued by the neighborhood bullies and causing mischief of his own, it will be a Christmas miracle if Ralphie can make it through the holidays with his glasses intact. Based on the semi-fictional writings of author Jean Shepherd, this film directed by Bob Clark has become a holiday classic for the ages.
Did You Know?
- The film’s setting is a town in Indiana, but was actually filmed in Cleveland, Ohio. To find an American city resembling an Indiana town of the 1940s, director Bob Clark sent his location scouts to 20 cities before selecting Cleveland.
- Jack Nicholson was originally interested in the role of The Old Man, but the film’s budget couldn’t afford to cast him.
- Peter Billingsley, the actor who played Ralphie, was the first child who auditioned for director Bob Clark. Clark figured he couldn’t hire the first child he saw audition, so he auditioned thousands of others before deciding to cast Billingsley as Ralphie anyway.
