The Paramount will be serving White Russians in addition to our usual concessions in honor of “The Dude”! And don’t forget to don your best bowling shirt or other Big Lebowski paraphernalia for our pre-show costume contest!
Starring Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, The Big Lebowski is an American classic written and directed by the Coen brothers. When The Dude is mistaken for a millionaire, he is commissioned to deliver a ransom for the real Lebowski’s kidnapped wife – but his plans are disrupted by when scheming friend Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) plots to keep the ransom money. Also featuring Julianne Moore and Steve Buscemi, the star-studded film includes supporting roles by John Turturro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and David Huddleston.
The Big Lebowski, beloved for its eccentric characters, unique dialogue, and eclectic soundtrack, is loosely based on the work of Raymond Chandler, which Joel Coen admired for the way it “moves episodically, and deals with the characters trying to unravel a mystery, as well as having a hopelessly complex plot that’s ultimately unimportant.” The film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2014 for its cultural significance.
Did you know?
- Though The Big Lebowski was a disappointment in the box office, bringing in just over $5.5 million domestically and receiving mixed reviews, the film has achieved cult favorite status since its release.
- The Dude says “man” almost 150 times in the movie (nearly 1.5 times per minute!).
- Much of The Dude’s wardrobe was made up of Jeff Bridge’s own clothes, including his Jellies sandals which he still uses.
