Disney’s classic 1989 film comes to life on The Paramount screen! The rebellious 16-year-old mermaid Ariel is fascinated with life on land. On one of her visits to the surface, which are forbidden by her father, King Triton, she falls for a human prince. Determined to be with her new love, Ariel makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch Ursula to become human for three days. But when plans go awry for the star-crossed lovers, the king must make the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter.
Did You Know?
- Originally, Sebastian was to have an English accent. It was lyricist/producer Howard Ashman who suggested he be Jamaican. This opened the door to calypso-style numbers like “Under the Sea”, which won the Academy Award.
- “Part of Your World” was nearly cut from the film; Disney executives felt that it was “boring”, as well as being too far over the heads of the children for whom it was intended. However, when the test screening was shown to adults, many of them were moved to tears; so the song was left in the film.
- This was the last Disney animated feature to use hand-painted cels and analog camera and film work. 1,000 different colors were used on 1,100 backgrounds. Over one million drawings were done in total.
