Jamey Johnson ▪ March 24 ▪ 8pm ▪ $75VIP/44.50/39.50
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson has been showered with plaques, trophies and award statuettes, but they aren’t the answer to his dreams.

“My dream already came true,” says the Alabama native who has rocketed to Nashville stardom. “All I ever wanted was to get to just ride around and sing country music. It’s cool when things happen along the way, because those are things I never thought I could achieve. But whatever happens, I’ll just keep on doing what I do. I wake up every day and go play some more country music.”

The things that have happened along the way include songwriter awards for 2005′s “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk,” which Jamey co-wrote for Trace Adkins. In the spring of 2007, the Academy of Country Music gave Jamey a Song of the Year award for co-writing the George Strait hit “Give It Away,” and the Country Music Association did the same later that year.

Mercury Records issued his album That Lonesome Song in the summer of 2008, and the collection was universally hailed as a masterwork. Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Esquire and The Los Angeles Times are just a few of the major publications that sang its praises.

The disc led to invitations from Willie Nelson to play Farm Aid and to appear on Letterman and Leno. In April 2009, the album earned Jamey a Gold Record. The set’s “In Color” was named the Song of the Year by both the ACM and the CMA. During 2009 and 2010, Jamey collected five Grammy Award nominations. He toured with country titan Hank Williams Jr. and was one of the few country acts asked to play the massive Bonnaroo festival in June 2010.

In the midst of all of this, Jamey Johnson worked little by little on the landmark project that has become The Guitar Song. It is a 25-song, double album with thematically linked sets of songs dubbed the “Black Album” and the “White Album.”
Jamey Johnson is a lover of classic country sounds, and he regularly performs oldies in his stage shows. The Guitar Song contains his versions of Kris Kristofferson’s “For the Good Times,” Vern Gosdin’s “Set ‘Em Up Joe” and Mel Tillis’s “Mental Revenge.” “Lonely at the Top” is a previously undiscovered gem co-written by the late Keith Whitley.

Jamey Johnson is a study in contrasts. He was raised in a devout household, yet he spent part of his youth drinking beer and playing songs at night on the Montgomery tombstone of Hank Williams. He is deadly serious about his music, yet has a wry and witty sense of humor. With his piercing pale-blue eyes and biker beard, he looks like a hell raiser, but he has the heart of a poet. He seems like a rebel, but Jamey Johnson spent eight years as a member of the highly disciplined U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.

“The road is where it’s at. I love it. That’s where you take country music. You don’t get the message out there by sitting at the house. I go out there and meet the people. When I come back home to make an album, I don’t want you to second-guess me. I’m telling you what is the right thing, because I’m the guy out there shaking their hands every night.”

“Everything comes from God. So when I write, it is my gift to Him. It is my interpretation of what He gave me, the circumstances that I drew the material from. So when I get done with a song, it’s not for my fans. It’s certainly not for the industry, the trophies, the accolades and the plaques. It is straight from me to God.”

The Paramount audience will watch the Academy Awards telecast live on large screens courtesy of WVAW the Charlottesville affiliate of the ABC Television Network, which broadcasts the Academy Awards presentation.  This is the 18th year that the Academy and ABC have cooperated with local charities to support official Oscar Night viewing parties throughout the country.  This year marks the second year that Charlottesville’s party has been sanctioned by the Academy.

“Oscar Night has always been an opportunity for friends and families to gather together and cheer for their favorite films and stars,” said Academy Executive Director Bruce Davis.  ”This nationwide network of fundraising parties is a natural extension of that shared experience.”  Oscar Night parties last year raised more than $3 million in 51 cities.  All money raised stays in the local community.

The University of Virginia and The Paramount Theater presents in association with the U.Va. Center for Politics, the Virginia Film Festival, the Quality Community Council of Charlottesville, and the Albemarle-Charlottesville NAACP

Featuring an introduction by Julian Bond, former chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and Professor Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics.

Based on the book Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice by Raymond Arsenault, the film offers interviews with many of the individuals involved, from the journalists who covered it and politicians who stood against it, to the riders themselves, who overcame pressure from all sides to earn the attention of the federal government in their struggle to desegregate public highway transit.

Tango Fire: The Fire Within ▪ February 9 ▪ 8pm ▪ $39.50/$29.50/$24.50 (on sale now)

Direct from Buenos Aires, the sensational Tango Fire Company of Buenos Aires presents their new show Tango Inferno – The Fire Within featuring, ten torrid dancers, one of Argentina’s finest young singers and a quartet of brilliant musicians, Tango Inferno – The Fire Within takes you on a seductive journey through the history of Tango – the world’s most alluring and exciting dance form. Tracing the roots of Tango, from its origins from the dance halls of Buenos Aires, to its rising popularity on the contemporary entertainment scene, the Tango Fire Company of Buenos Aires has become a true worldwide phenomenon.

The company has toured the USA, Canada, the UK, Europe, Asia and South Africa to the highest acclaim. Set against the musical backdrop of Astor Piazzolla, Mores, Gardel, Rodriguez and other Tango masters.

The Boston Globe raves that “rarely has the tempestuous Tango looked like so much exuberant, out-and-out fun as with the Tango Fire Company of Buenos Aires.” Though other Tango shows abound, “Tango Fire Company leaves you burning to take up where they left off,” claims The London Paper. “Don’t miss the passionate and irresistible allure of the Tango Fire Company of Buenos Aires”.

Booker T. and Bettye LaVette ▪ February 18 ▪ 8pm ▪ $39.50/$34.50/$29.50 (on sale now)

Booker T. Jones is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, record producer and arranger, best known for fronting the band Booker T. and the MGs. He has also worked in the studios with some of the highest regarded artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries such as Otis Redding, Albert King, Wilson Pickett, Bob Dylan, and Stevie Wonder. He is both a Musicians Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of fame inductee. He was the 2010 Grammy winner for the Best Pop Instrumentalist Album, and he has earned a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement.
Bettye LaVette is one of the greatest soul singers in American music history, possessed of an incredibly expressive voice that one moment will exude a formidable level of strength and intensity and the next will appear vulnerable, reflective, reeking of heartbreak. Although LaVette has been recording for over four decades, up to this point she has remained criminally unknown. Her latest CD, Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook debuted in the top 60 of Billboard Top 200 in its first week of release! She also debuted at #5 on the Indie releases chart and #1 on Billboard’s Blues chart! The album features songs composed by The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd among others.

Randy Newman ▪ March 1 ▪ 8pm ▪ $49.50/44.50/39.50
If Randy Newman’s self-titled 1968 debut on Reprise Records, co-produced by his childhood friend Lenny Waronker and the now equally legendary arranger Van Dyke Parks, seemed out of step with the times upon its release, that’s perhaps because he had created something timeless. Newman combined sophisticated orchestrations and indelible melodies with story-song lyrics that veered between the unabashedly romantic and the sarcastically humorous.
Over the course of 40 years, Newman has released 10 albums of original studio material, has been a prolific film music composer, a regular Academy Award nominee, and, in 2002, an Oscar winner for “If I Didn’t Have You” from Monsters, Inc.  In recent years, he has specialized in composing for an impressive range of critically acclaimed, commercially blockbuster family films, including Toy Story, James and The Giant Peach, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc, and Cars. Though Newman projects the image of misanthrope in his own work, he summons tremendous warmth, tenderness, and a gentler form of humor in the songs he’s created for these movies.   Newman is also a five-time Grammy Award winner, and the recipient, in 2002, of the Recording Academy’s prestigious Governors’ Award and has garnered three Emmys.

The Legendary Earl Scruggs with Family & Friends ▪ Mar 11▪ 8pm ▪ $44.50/34.50

Earl Scruggs is a musical pioneer, a revolutionary banjo player, and one of the best-known artists in the history of country music. He has received four Grammy Awards, a National Medal of the Arts, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, among other distinctions. He is an inductee to the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Hall of Honor. Scruggs began his career in 1945 with Bill Monroe. While a member of Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys, he met singer/guitarist Lester Flatt, with whom he would start Flatt & Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys in 1948. The group became the most prominent band in bluegrass history and made popular this sound to millions of listeners with their theme to the enduring TV series The Beverly Hillbillies, “The Ballad of Jed Clampett.” Scruggs also wrote and recorded the instrumental “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” that was used throughout the movie Bonnie and Clyde. The instrumental won two Grammy Awards.

When he parted ways with Flatt in 1969, Scruggs then formed the Earl Scruggs Revue with his sons, and increased his audience further with a repertoire that included folk-rock and other outside influences with the traditional country genre. Scruggs remains an active performer with concert tours, recordings, and TV appearances.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo ▪ March 16 ▪ 8p ▪ $44.50/39.50/34.50

For more than forty years, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has married the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds and sentiments of Christian gospel music. The result is a musical and spiritual alchemy that has touched a worldwide audience representing every corner of the religious, cultural and ethnic landscape. Their musical efforts over the past four decades have garnered praise and accolades within the recording industry, but also solidified their identity as a cultural force to be reckoned with. In the mid-1980s, Paul Simon visited South Africa and incorporated Black Mambazo’s rich tenor/alto/bass harmonies into his Graceland album – a landmark 1986 recording that was considered seminal in introducing world music to mainstream audiences.

Grease Sing A Long ▪ March 25 ▪ 8pm ▪ $10.00/7.00

Grease has been remastered to be brighter and shinier than ever before. What makes Grease Sing-A-Long such an event is the addition of lyrics to the bottom of the screen along with an open invitation to sing your heart out and dance in the aisle while watching Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta at his prime.

The moment the Grease soundtrack starts, chills rush up and down your spine, your heart thrills and you find yourself belting out words you assumed were long since forgotten, and the few you don’t remember are dancing helpfully across the bottom of the screen – just below John  Travolta’s adorably dimpled chin.

But this isn’t your mama’s karaoke sing-a-long and don’t expect a boring yellow ball bouncing over the words. The lyrics have been wittily animated and worked seamlessly into the story, slyly winking at the audience and giving some extra sass.

Judy Collins ▪ April 1 ▪ 8pm ▪ $44.50/39.50/29.50

Judy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide with her unique blend of interpretative folksongs and contemporary themes. Her impressive career has spanned more than 50 years. At 13, Judy Collins made her public debut performing Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos but it was the music of such artists as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, as well as the traditional songs of the folk revival, that sparked Judy’s love of lyrics. She soon moved away from the classical piano and began her lifelong love with the guitar.

In 1961, Judy Collins released her first album, A Maid of Constant Sorrow, at the age of 22 and began a thirty-five year association with Jac Holzman and Elektra Records. She interpreted the songs of fellow artists – particularly the social poets of the time such as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton. Judy was instrumental in bringing other singer-songwriters to a wider audience including poet/musician Leonard Cohen – and musicians Joni Mitchell and Randy Newman.

Ralphie May ▪ April 7 ▪ 7:30p ▪ $29.50 on sale Feb 4th

Ralphie May’s popularity exploded from the success of NBC’s hit show, “Last Comic Standing” making him one of the biggest comedians in the country. Most recently, Ralphie just finished shooting a new movie titled “The Best and Brightest” starring Neil Patrick Harris and Amy Sedaris, scheduled for release later this year.
Having performed stand-up on numerous late night talk shows, including four appearances on CBS’s “The Late Late Show” as well as eleven appearances on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and he was the first comedian in over 10 years to receive a standing ovation on “The Tonight Show.”

Russian National Ballet Theatre ▪ Giselle ▪ April 22 ▪ 7:30p ▪ $54.50/44.50/39.50

The Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s, when many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union’s ballet institutions were exercising their new-found creative freedom by starting new, vibrant companies dedicated not only to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet but to invigorate this tradition as the Russians began to accept new developments in the dance from around the world.

The company, then titled the Soviet National Ballet, was founded by and incorporated graduates from the great Russian choreographic schools of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Perm.  The principal dancers of the company came from the upper ranks of the great ballet companies and academies of Russia, and the companies of Riga, Kiev and even Warsaw.  Today, the Russian National Ballet Theatre is its own institution, with over 50 dancers of singular instruction and vast experience, many of whom have been with the company since its inception. In addition to their upcoming tour, beginning in January 2011 the company will embark upon a 4-month coast-to-coast tour of the United States.

Lewis Black ▪ April 28 ▪ 8pm ▪ $49.50 presented by LiveNation

Prolific funny man, actor, author, and stand-up comedian/ranter Lewis Black will be live onstage as part of his IN GOD WE RUST tour at venues around the country.

Lewis’ live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. Lewis yells so they don’t have to. He is a passionate performer who is a more pissed-off optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.

Lewis Black came into national prominence in his appearances on THE DAILY SHOW in 1996.  His appearances on THE DAILY SHOW led to four specials on Comedy Central. In 2001, he won the Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. He has also produced six comedy CD albums, including the 2007 Grammy-Award winning The Carnegie Hall Performance.
