and a selection of best-loved carols.
The Oratorio Society presents its annual holiday concert with seasonal music for the whole family. The 100-strong chorus, under the direction of L. Thomas Vining, will be joined by a full professional orchestra. The performance will include Rutter’s Magnificat, Telemann’s Trumpet Concerto in D and a variety of traditional seasonal music to put you and your entire family in a festive mood.
John Rutter's Magnificat (My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord) is considered his most significant contribution to choral literature. This outstanding composer's unique combination of beautiful melodies, sonorous harmonies, syncopated rhythms and brilliant fanfares are evident throughout this glorious and uplifting work. The music evokes the spirit of the many exuberant festivals held throughout Europe where people celebrate the feast days of the Virgin Mary with singing, dancing and processions. The soprano soloist for the Magnificat will be Rebecca Ewing of Charlottesville.
The Telemann Trumpet Concerto in D will feature internationally acclaimed trumpeter Curt Christensen as guest soloist. Other works to be performed include Morten Lauridsen’s haunting O Magnum Mysterium, Mack Wilberg’s setting of Away in a Manger and several of John Rutter’s attractive arrangements of familiar carols. The concert will conclude with a rousing rendition of We Wish You A Merry Christmas, to send both audience and performers away with the cheering spirit of the season.
