Corey Harris

with guest poet, Kwame Dawes

Saturday, September 13
7:30 pm

Underwritten by The Paramount Theater's Community Performance Access Fund, Martha Jefferson Hospital, Silverchair, Sonjia Smith, and UVA's Office for Diversity and Equity to benefit the African American Teaching Fellows of Charlottesville/Albemarle

Popular songwriter, guitarist, educator, and performer, Corey Harris is a 2007 recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship Award. Since 1995, Harris has explored a creative blues style which blends elements of jazz, reggae, gospel, African and Caribbean folk music to produce his own unique sound. Through research and musical collaboration in Mali, Guinea, Cameroon, Louisiana, and Mississippi, he has successfully infused his music with an eclectic range of sounds and styles which demonstrate the African influence on American blues.

This concert to benefit the African American Teaching Fellows of Charlottesville/Albemarle will open with Ghanian-born poet, Kwame Dawes, professor of English at the University of South Carolina. Harris' warm and passionate music and Dawes' poetry both have important messages to share -- making this performance especially memorable.
