Peter and the Wolf

The award-winning Charlottesville High School Orchestra String Ensemble presents the well-beloved musical classic by Serge Prokofiev!  Conducted by CHSO Director Laura Mulligan Thomas, and with narration by CHS Theater Director and drama teacher David Small, Peter and the Wolf is renowned as an excellent teaching tool and excellent fun for children and adults.

Each of the characters is represented by his or her own instrument and musical theme -- cheerful Peter is the strings; the angry and forbidding wolf is the French horn; the mournful duck is the oboe; and the frantic bird is the flute. For those familiar with the piece since childhood, the sound of the instrument is forever identified with the character.

Guest wind-instrument players from the Charlottesville community perform with the CHS String Ensemble, and the lively and entertaining Mr. Small fills in the story between the musical passages.  After the 45-minute show, children will have the opportunity to see the instruments, talk to musicians, and dream about what instrument they might like to play.

Proceeds from the concert will help the Charlottesville High School Orchestra fund its trip to perform at the "Fiesta-Val" of Music National invitational music competition in New York in April 2008.
