Virginia Festival of the Book, produced by Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, presents The Honorable John Lewis (D-GA) and 1968 Olympian Dr. John Carlos share their experiences advocating and fighting for civil and human rights.
Congressman Lewis’ most recent book is Across That Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change, draws from his experience as a leader of the Civil Rights Movement to offer timeless guidance to anyone seeking to live virtuously and transform the world. His wisdom, poignant recollections, and powerful ideas will inspire a new generation to usher in a freer, more peaceful society.
Dr. John Carlos’ memoir, co-written with Dave Zirin, is John Carlos: The Sports Moment That Changed the World, details his life as a track star, winning the bronze medal in the 200 meters race at the 1968 Olympics, where his Black Power salute on the podium with Tommie Smith caused much political controversy. The book describes the personal and professional sacrifices that followed that moment.
