Commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic by seeing a movie about another Titanic – The Poseidon!
Made in 1972 and based on a novel by Paul Gallico, the action epic centers on the fictional ocean liner SS Poseidon, an aged luxury liner from the golden age of travel, on its final voyage from New York City to Athens before being sent to the scrapyard. In a scene that fictionally rivals the drama and terror of real Titanic, a tsunami capsizes the ship, leaving it upside down but still afloat, trapping a group of marooned survivors. A true nailbiter, the stellar cast, including Gene Hackman, Shelley Winters and Ernest Borgnine, gives performances that leave you uncertain if they will survive.
A huge critical and financial success, second only to The GodFather in 1972, The Poseidon Adventure was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Original Song (winner, “There’s Got to Be A Morning After”), Best Special Effects, Best Cinemagraphy, and Best Musical Score (John Williams).
Rated PG, 2 hrs. 20 min., including intermission
