Encore Presentation!

We are thrilled to announce that the documentary World Peace and other 4th-Grade Achievements will return for an encore presentation at the Paramount! This follows a phenomenal sold-out “Sneak Preview” in February and the subsequent sold-out World Premiere at the prestigious South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas.

The one-hour film by award-winning filmmaker Chris Farina portrays local public school teacher John Hunter and his 2006 Venable School class as they participate in an educational exercise that Hunter developed called “the World Peace Game.” The film follows the nine- and ten-year-old students over an eight-week period as they assume roles as world leaders responding to an ongoing series of military, economic, and environmental crises.

Virginia National Bank has made a generous contribution providing free tickets for 100 local teachers from the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County Schools for the April 17th screening.  The Horton Fund and Bama Works Fund – both administered by the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation – provided major funding for the project, which also received support from numerous local individual donors.

World Peace and other 4th-Grade Achievements hopes to inspire wider adoption of Hunter’s efforts to teach children the “work of peace” and promote the replication of the World Peace Game.  Educator Andy Stamp of the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education has written that “World Peace and other 4th-Grade Achievements is an inspirational documentary that engages the audience on many different levels as it follows John Hunter’s mission as a teacher to challenge his students’ thinking and imaginations well beyond their experiences.  It will leave you motivated and hopeful about the future of the world in the hands of the young leaders in John’s classroom.”

Filmmaker Chris Farina’s previous local films include West Main Street, a film about Charlottesville co-produced with Reid Oechslin, and The James River, co-produced with Paul Wagner and Paul Roberts as part of WHTJ’s series, East of the Blue Ridge.
